What Not to Wear: Cruise Edition

Admit it, as soon as we book a new Disney cruise, many of us start thinking and planning not only what excursions and spa treatments we are going to enjoy, but what are we gonna wear?!  One important tip to get you started; pull out all the clothes you plan on packing, and then put half of them back!  Sounds crazy, right?  When on a cruise, you are not only limited with space, although Disney Cruise Line has helped us here with the under-the-bed space, but you also tend to wear shorts and bathing suits for a large portion of your day while on deck!

So, what is the appropriate attire while cruising with Disney?  They suggest “cruise casual” for many nights in the dining rooms.  This means slacks, or capris, and blouse; or Maxi dresses or a sundress with cute sandals or even the dressier flip flops (just not the type flip flops you would wear at the pool), for the ladies.  Guys, you would need to wear long pants (slacks or khakis) and a collared shirt (like a polo/golf shirt).  In other words, wearing jeans, bathing suits, gym shorts and tank tops, are not acceptable attire when in the three main dining rooms.

There are also special nights, like semi-formal and formal nights, where you can dress up as formal as a tux for the man and a cocktail dress for the lady, or you can stick with just the “cruise casual”, if you like.  Our family has gotten to the point on these nights that we usually dress in “Sunday dress”, I usually wear a nice pantsuit or dressy top and dressy, long pants, while Bob and Brian wear dress slacks and button up shirt (tie optional).  Now, our daughter, Ashley, she’s our fashionista and loves to still dress in a more formal type dress, and that is perfectly fine.

Throughout the day time of your cruise, feel free to wear whatever you want. Gym shorts and t-shirts or tank tops are a very popular choice. Most of the time you will have your swimsuit on for a majority of the day, so ladies make sure you have a large t-shirt or coverup for walking to and from the pool. During the day feel free to wear whatever you are most comfortable in. Shoes are highly recommended to wear throughout the ship and especially on the upper decks where the pools are because of how hot the deck will get.

When picking out what to wear for any time during your cruise, keep in mind that there are other families with small children, so a little bit of modesty never hurt anyone. Observing etiquette for cruising, especially with Disney, will benefit you and your family greatly. Yes even the way you dress is part of the etiquette recognized while cruising.  Most of all, have fun on your cruise, and dress for success for the whole family!
